An oxidizer is something that causes the release of oxygen. In order for most substances to burn, they need to be in the presence of air. There is no air in space; therefore, rocket engines need oxidizers as well as fuel in order to work. All of the ShuttleÕs engines use oxidizers that produce oxygen and guarantee a steady airflow so that the fuel will burn as expected.
